Metaphors

A figure of speech where a word or phrase is applied to something else which it is not.  One thing is being used as a symbol for something else.  An example would be the phrase “He’s as strong as an Ox.”  The person is not literally an ox, or equal in strength to one.  Ox are commonly known for their strength, so the word Ox is used as a symbol of strength to represent that this person has at least above average strength.
