Figurative language

When the phrasing of how words are put together mean something more then the literal sentence that is constructed.  This is usually done to get a specific message or point across.  Saying something like “that person is as tall as a tree” doesn’t actually mean that.  It was just a way to state the person is so tall in comparison to most, that it is almost as if they were as tall as a large object like a tree.
