Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

A treatment used in patients with severe depression or bipolar disorders when all other treatments have failed.  ECT involves small electric currents being passed through the brain while the patient has been put under anesthesia.  This procedure can change brain chemistry, which can trigger a quick reversal of the existing mental health condition.
